The Step-By-Step Procedure of Upholstery

There are important steps to follow when upholstering an old couch. The steps should be followed so that the end product looks amazing and is comfortable to sit on. Having the correct tools, materials and fabrics is also a vital part in the upholstering procedure.

  • All the old fabric has to be removed. The old fabric might be weak and brittle from the years of wear. There might also be discoloration that won’t match your stunning furniture. The old fabric will also have to be used at a later stage of the upholstering process.
  • On average, there would be about 1000 staples removed from a three seat couch. It might be a time consuming task but must be done for a neat finish. You cannot staple over existing staples.
  • The frame is then thoroughly checked for any damages. In many instances, the material can be repaired but some cases, the frame would have to be replaced completely. Correct polymers and glues would be required to repair wood or metal frames.
  • Springs and webbing will also have to be checked. Springs can lose shape over long periods of time and webbing could be sinking if heavy weights have been placed on the couch. Sometimes, the upholsterer won’t have to replace these items if the shapes have been maintained.
  • Foam is then attached to the entire skeleton or frame by highly skilled upholsterers. This foam gives the couch a spongy shape for comfort and aesthetics. This foam needs to fit exactly how the previous foam used to, ensuring that the couch the client had before is the same but reupholstered.
  • Dacron is then placed over the foam to enhance the contours and shape of the cushioning in the couch. Dacron also enhances the comfort quality of the couches.
  • At this stage, once the upholsterer is happy with the shape of the contours, the fabric will get cut out using the old fabric that was removed as templates.
  • Once all the panels of fabric have been cut out, they will be sewn together using special upholstery cotton. The sewn together panels can now be fitted and stapled in place on the frame and foam.
  • Spin bond is then attached to the underside of the furniture to hide the inside of the framework. It is important to ensure a flawless upholstered couch.
  • The legs can now be screwed into position. Removing them beforehand will make the fabric-fitting easier and it results in a professional product.
  • Depending on what material the couch is made from will depend if it needs to be treated with Scotch Guard.

The item is then wrapped and ready to be delivered to the owner.
